This month, English Bridge Studios celebrated a significant milestone: 40 years as a creative hub for artists in Shrewsbury. The EBW40 event was more than just a birthday bash; it was a chance to reflect, celebrate, and look forward to future opportunities.
As we gathered to honor this special anniversary, we recognized the importance of revisiting our roots while preparing for the exciting journeys that lie ahead. With lease negotiations finally moving toward a long-awaited 40-year extension, it felt like the perfect time to open our doors, reconnect with our community, and welcome back alumni who have helped shape English Bridge Studios into what it is today.
From Grassroots to Full House
The week-long celebration featured events designed to honor our history while showcasing the incredible work being done in the studios. During our two days of Open Studios, we welcomed over 350 visitors—more than double the foot traffic we had during the same weekend last year.

As we wandered through the building, it was invigorating to see each room alive with activity. Artists engaged with visitors, demonstrating hands-on printmaking and working on vibrant mosaics, while the scent of wood-fired pizza filled the air.
People were not merely browsing; they were genuinely involved—asking insightful questions and contemplating the techniques and stories behind each piece.
One of my favorite moments was spotting the Sketch Club Severn gathered outside, sketchbooks in hand, reflecting the building back to itself through their artwork. The shared experience of enjoying our video installation, which revisited past events, deepened our collective appreciation for our community's journey.
Stronger, Together
The success of this event depended greatly on community involvement, and this year’s celebration highlighted this communal spirit.
Over the past year, our artist community has grown significantly, and these creative individuals have been instrumental in shaping the vision for English Bridge Studios. They participated in the planning of EBW40, contributing ideas, curating exhibitions, managing social media, setting up physical spaces, and conducting workshops.

Our planning team of 16 demonstrated what it truly means to come together. Each artist had a voice, and that collaborative mindset fostered a shared sense of ownership for the event and the space we cherish. As laughter filled the hallways, it became clear that the future of English Bridge Studios is in our hands, shaped by both artists and community members alike.
Reconnecting with Alumni
A truly heartwarming aspect of our celebration was the return of alumni from past years. Their stories intertwined with those of current artists and visitors, creating a tapestry of shared experiences and memories.
Many alumni reflected on how their time at English Bridge Studios catalyzed their careers. One alumnus, a sculptor now thriving in London, expressed how the connections formed here shaped both his artistic practice and his appreciation for collaborative art. This sentiment echoed throughout the event, reminding us of the lasting impact this creative hub has had throughout its 40-year history.
A Vision for the Future
With EBW40 now behind us and a fresh lease on the horizon, we feel a surge of excitement about what lies ahead. The vibrant community blossoming within the walls of English Bridge Studios inspires us daily.
The discussions sparked during our celebrations will guide our future plans, including potential workshops, mentorship opportunities, and new interdisciplinary collaborations. We aim to ensure that our space continues to nurture artistic creativity and innovation.
While we are enthusiastic about the future, we remain committed to our core mission. We believe in the power of art to unite people, inspire meaningful conversations, and foster change. Our dedication to nurturing creativity and building lasting connections between artists and the wider community will always be our guiding principle.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude
As we reflect on 40 years of English Bridge Studios, we are filled with immense gratitude for the supportive community that has helped us along the way. The milestone celebration served as a powerful reminder of our journey and the collective future we are building.
The lessons we've learned over the years energize us as we move forward, and we invite everyone to take part in this ongoing story. Here’s to the next chapter at English Bridge Studios, filled with new artists, fresh ideas, and a commitment to creativity that inspires future generations.
Thank you for being a part of these fantastic 40 years. Let’s keep creating together!
