An Introduction to Indian Woodblock Printing
Join me at English Bridge Studios, Shrewsbury — a calm, creative introduction to Indian woodblock printing and the first stage in The Printed Block workshop journey.
In this small-group, artist-led workshop, you’ll learn how to print using traditional hand-carved wooden blocks and fabric paints. Guided step by step, you’ll explore colour, pattern, repetition and block placement while learning how much paint and pressure are needed to create a clear, successful print.
You’ll begin by practising on fabric and experimenting with different block and colour combinations. You’ll then use your new skills to print your own organic cotton tea towel or cushion cover and create a small finished print on handmade paper to take home.
Rooted in heritage craft and inspired by botanical forms, this workshop offers a relaxed and welcoming space to slow down, explore your creativity and enjoy making something by hand.
During the workshop, you will:
• Practise printing on fabric
• Explore colour, pattern and repetition
• Learn how to apply fabric paint and achieve a clear print
• Print your own organic cotton tea towel or cushion cover (feather filler available to purchase on the day).
• Create a small finished print on handmade paper
Each piece will reflect your own choice of pattern, colour and arrangement, resulting in work that is completely individual to you.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners, as well as anyone with some creative experience who would like to explore Indian woodblock printing.
All materials are provided.
Places are limited to keep the workshop relaxed, supportive and personal, so early booking is recommended.
